European Earwig
Forficula auricularia

This member of the skin winged order of insects came into Southern California in the 1930's. It has displaced the native earwig to a large degree. It is considered a household and garden pest because it eats seeds, seedlings and young plants. The large pinchers can capture and kill prey and hurt you if you handle the insect.
