Gambel's Quail
Callipepela gambelii

This species is the desert cousin of the California Quail, the state bird. They can inter-breed with the California Quail. They live in the Borrego Desert and to the east. These birds are low on the food chain and are eaten by birds, mammals and reptiles. Their eggs are a special treat for snakes and Gila Monsters.
