San Diego Fairy Shrimp
Branchinecta sandiegonensis

This tiny shrimp seems to be magical. The egg sac lies on top of the soil in a depression and waits for rain to come and fill up the basin. Within two weeks the next generation of shrimp is being made. This is a very endangered species of animal and is in the center of the fights between developers and conservationists.
